Most gutter crews carry one machine and run one product: a five-inch K-style aluminum gutter. For a lot of houses, that is the right call. The trouble starts when your structure is not most houses.
Maybe you have a screen enclosure or pool cage where the gutter is also holding up the frame, and a standard trough simply cannot carry that load or that much water. Jeff Ours, the owner, is a state-licensed home and building inspector with more than 20 years in construction and a court-recognized eye for how buildings are actually put together. A French drain is simple in theory and easy to get wrong in practice. We dig a trench to the right depth along the path the water wants to take, line the whole trench with non-woven filter fabric, set a perforated pipe in the bottom on a steady fall, surround it with washed round stone, fold the fabric over the top, and blend it back into the yard. Here is the difference that decides whether your specialty gutter works or fails: it has to be built to the structure, not pulled off a shelf. A standard five-inch K-style gutter is mass-produced for an average roof. Put it on a screen enclosure, a commercial parapet, or a clogged awning, and it either overflows, leaks, or carries a load it was never made to hold.
Take super gutters as the clearest example. A screen-enclosure super gutter is not just bigger, it is the beam the cage hangs on. The heavy versions run a wall thickness of about 0.040 to 0.050 inch, compared to the 0.027 inch on a typical stock gutter, which is why they are several times stronger and can carry the structure and the water at the same time. A commercial box gutter is the same idea: a high-capacity trough that moves far more water than a residential gutter and ties into the roof the right way. Copper and half-round are about getting the period look right on a home where stock aluminum simply does not belong.
