First, it finishes and seals the roofline. The fascia closes off the open ends of your rafters and meets the soffit underneath, so wind-driven rain and pests cannot get up under the roof. Together with the drip edge, it sends water off the roof and into the gutter instead of behind it.
Second, and this is the part most people miss, it is the structural board your gutters bolt to. Seamless gutters mount straight to the fascia with hidden hangers. Fix the fascia without fixing what soaked it and you will be back here in a year.
