A gutter has one job: catch the water coming off your roof and carry it away from your house. When it sags, leaks, or pulls loose, it stops doing that job, and the water has to go somewhere. In Ocala that is a real problem, because we get more than fifty inches of rain a year, most of it in hard summer storms that dump several inches in an afternoon. A single inch of rain on an average roof sheds well over a thousand gallons of water, and every gallon weighs about eight pounds. That is the load your gutters and hangers are fighting every storm.
When a gutter fails, the water runs straight down your wall, pools against the foundation, washes the mulch out of your beds, and soaks the fascia board the gutter is nailed to. Wet fascia rots. Rotted fascia cannot hold a hanger, so the gutter sags more, holds more water, and tears loose a little further with every rain. Left alone, a fifteen-dollar problem becomes a wood-rot, foundation, and interior-leak problem. This is the number one cause of gutters pulling off the house. Florida practice allows hangers up to about three feet apart. On a roof shedding a thousand gallons in a storm, that is not enough. The water-filled gutter gets heavy, the few hangers holding it give, and the run peels away from the fascia. We set hangers every two feet so the load is carried, not dumped on a handful of screws.
A lot of homes here were hung with .027 aluminum, the budget thickness. It dents and bows under weight and never goes back. Once a gutter deforms, it holds water and pulls harder on every hanger.
Sectional gutters are joined every few feet, and every joint is a future leak. The sealant dries out in the Florida sun, cracks, and starts dripping, usually right over a door or walkway.
A gutter has to fall slightly toward the downspout. When it sags out of level, water sits in the low spot instead of draining, which adds weight and breeds the grime that clogs it.
Oak leaves and pine needles pack the gutter and downspout, the standing water rots the wood behind it, and rotted wood will not hold a fastener. At that point you are not repairing a gutter, you are repairing the house first.
