If your gutters overflow on one end, hold a strip of standing water days after the rain stops, or pour over the front edge in a hard storm, the problem usually is not the gutter itself. It is the pitch. A gutter has to fall slightly toward the downspout so the water runs out instead of sitting. When that fall is wrong, or when the gutter was hung to a crooked fascia board instead of to a level line, the water has nowhere to go. We come out, put a level on the whole run, and reset it to the right fall so it drains the way it should, then tell you straight whether a re-level fixes it or whether something underneath needs attention first.

A gutter that holds water is not a small annoyance. It is weight your house was never meant to carry, sitting in the wrong place. Water weighs about eight pounds a gallon, and a low spot in a gutter can hold gallons of it long after the storm has passed. That standing load pulls the gutter further out of level, which makes the low spot deeper, which holds more water. The problem feeds itself. In Ocala we get more than fifty inches of rain a year, most of it in hard summer afternoons that fill a gutter in minutes, so a run that cannot drain fast enough simply spills over the edge and sends the water straight down your wall and against the foundation.
Standing water also sits against the metal and the fascia board, breeds the grime and mosquitoes that thrive in Florida heat, and rots the wood the gutter is hung from. Once that wood softens, the hangers let go and the whole run starts to sag. Re-leveling now is how you stop a pitch problem before it turns into a wood-rot and water-damage problem you pay a lot more to fix.
When water sits in your gutters or sheets over the side, it almost always traces back to one of a few things, and the right fix depends entirely on which one. Here is what we actually find on Ocala homes:
Over years, the weight of water, packed debris, and the Florida sun working on the fasteners lets a run settle out of level. The fall that used to carry water to the downspout flattens out, and now there is a low spot where water pools and sits.
A lot of gutters were installed by running them straight along the fascia board so they look perfect from the street. The trouble is the fascia itself is not always level, and even when it is, a gutter hung dead level does not drain. It has to tilt toward the downspout. Hang it to the board instead of to a pitched line and it holds water from the first rain.
When the hangers are set near the three-foot spacing that passes here, a heavy, water-filled gutter bows between them and creates low spots that pond. We reset hangers every two feet so the run holds its line.
Sometimes the pitch is fine but the water has nowhere fast to exit, either because the run is too long for one downspout or because the outlet is packed with oak leaves and pine needles. Before we touch the pitch, we make sure the water actually has a way out.
On newer homes around Wildwood and the growing Villages corridor, we regularly find gutters that held water the first week the family moved in, hung fast by a crew that was already on to the next house. New does not mean level.
Here is the detail most crews miss, and it is the whole job. A gutter that looks perfectly straight along your roofline is not supposed to be level. It is supposed to fall, just slightly, toward the downspout, about a quarter inch for every ten feet of run. That tilt is small enough that your eye will never catch it from the yard, but it is the entire difference between water running out and water sitting in.
The cheap way to hang a gutter is to follow the fascia board so it looks tidy from the curb. The right way is to snap a pitched line, ignore whatever the board is doing, and set the gutter to drain. A licensed inspector reads that fall down to the fraction of an inch, because the house, the fascia, and the gutter are three separate things, and only one of them has to be right. We set the one that matters.
We put a level on the entire length, find where the water is sitting, and reset the gutter to a true quarter-inch-per-ten-feet drop toward the downspout so it empties instead of ponds.

Plenty of the gutters we are called to look at do not need to be replaced. They are sound runs that simply lost their fall, or that were hung wrong the day they went up. That is a re-level, and it is the cheaper fix, and we will say so plainly. We are not going to tell you that you need a whole new gutter system just to write a bigger ticket.
The honest line, again, is the metal and the wood. If your gutters still hold their shape and the fascia behind them is solid, resetting the pitch will give you years more out of them for a fraction of a replacement. If the metal is thin and already bowed, or the wood it hangs from has gone soft, re-leveling just moves the next low spot a few feet down the run, and we will show you why a fresh seamless run actually costs less over the next ten years than chasing the same problem every season. Either way, you hear the real answer first, and then you decide.

Look for water standing in the gutter a day after rain, a dirt or grime line that marks where water always sits, mosquitoes around the gutter, or overflow on one section during a storm. Any of those is a sign the fall is off and the run needs re-leveling.
